Favorite Things Thursday

Here are my favorite items this week that got a yellow star in google reader.....

Over at No Time for Flash Cards, Allison,a creative genius when it comes to projects for kids..made an adorable game on recycling. I love this and cant wait to get one made up for Avery. My goals are to keep our trash pile smaller than our recycling pile and I know I need help from everyone in the family to get this to work every week. I cant think of a better way to teach her what we can and cannot recycle with this fun game!

How can you not love something that is easy to make, can be a great gift and probably the cutest thing you could ever see a little one wearing? I just don't think you cant love it...so it easy got a position here on my favorite things. I think that this little apron is so cute, the instructions to make it seem simple enough and it might be my go to present for birthdays coming up...cause its freaking ADORABLE! Check out Nancy's great tutorial on how to make a quick and easy childs apron over at My Blonde Ambitions. If you happen to be a friend with a daughter having a birthday soon, just ignore this link cause I am probably making it for you child :)! Oh and I am totally making Avery one of these for Christmas!

I have to feature something related to food since I "mainly" blog about it..right? Well, I have tons and tons of food starred in google so it was tough to pick one.  I decided to go with something totally perfect for fall and something I have never made. Every year I see whoopie pies popping up all over the blog world and I have yet to make any. I will admit I am not a fan of frosting or whip cream, so I never made them...but if it has the right flavors I can sometimes handle it.  This recipe looks like it has the right flavors and seriously I cant imagine not falling in love with it on first bit. Come back soon and I will share how it went when I attempt to make these beautiful Pumpkin Whoopie Pies from the Brown-Eyed Baker!

My favorite etsy find is..crochet slippers. I have always wished I could knit or crotch and make beautiful things...but I cant. I have tried it several times...my lines are never straight and all I tend to make are big scarfs that are not straight. Every year I look at slippers on etsy..save them to my favorite and for some reason never buy them. I really think they are cuter than any slipper I can find at the mall plus they look super comfy. Maybe this year I will take the plunge and buy some of these darn cute things! Oh and they have the cutest one for kids too over at Pleasantly Plump Knits....I must get some!

Please share some of your favorite finds this week....

Halloween Wreath!

I love Halloween. I just think its a fun way to end fall and move into the crazy holidays, all of which I adore! I love to see all the kiddos (and adults, sometimes) dress up and have a great time, usually high from candy!

Halloween 2008

Since the girls are getting older and Avery loves to dress up I decided to make some Halloween decorations this year. I have always done fall decorations in the house and on the day of Halloween decorated our front door! I love to make our house stand out just a bit and remember loving houses that made an effort when I was a kid on outdoor decorations. So that is all I have focused on. Here is a picture of our outside decor...once it gets dark I have a strobe light, fog lamp and creepy music playing to really spook it up a bit! I wanted to have a little Halloween fun inside for the girls to enjoy now!

When I found Riley Blake, Boo To You Fabric, I knew I had to use it for my Halloween decor (and also a few Halloween Shirt Appliqués..those I will show soon!) My first thought was to make a wreath. I loved a fabric Christmas Wreath that a saw a few months back, so I thought I would try my own version with this aborable fabric!

Halloween Wreath Materials

The Supplies

  • Foam Wreath
  • Fabric Fat Quarters
  • Colorful Brads
  • Satin Ribbon
  • Hot Glue

I took one of my fat quarters fabrics and cut a little mark every 1 inch alone the bottom of the fabric. At the mark I than ripped the fabric to create long pieces of the fabric to wrap around the wreath. You can tear or you can cut. I like tear cause it gives the fabric a little distressed look.

Starting on the back of the wreath, I took my hot glue gun made a little dot and attached my first piece of fabric. I than wrapped the fabric around wreath overlapping a little bit until the wreath was covered. As you add your next piece of 1 inch fabric, add some more hot glue to secure the pieces onto the foam wreath.

Halloween Wreath Progress

I wanted to add some height to the center of the wreath so I took some of the foam from the back side. I took a basis kitchen knife and cut a chunk out of the back. Than I took the hot glue gun an attacked to the foam to the inside of the wreath. I used a lot of glue to make sure that the foam was not going to fall off. As you can kind of see in this picture I made an arch look so I could only attach the two end pieces. You could also use a toothpick to secure the middle.

Next I cut little tons of different size circles out of my different fat quarters.  On the fabric that had cute little spooky Halloween faces I just cut around them individually.  All in all I cute about 60 pieces of circles to lay on top of each other.

Halloween wreath circle how to

This part is where you can get creative, pick out the different circles you want and lay them. Take a pair of small scissors and cut a slit in all three of the layers. Take a colorful brad and connect the three pieces together. Do not unfold the brad because that is how you will attach it to the foam wreath. Take your wreath and place your brad into the wreath, start laying circles all  on your wreath. You could do like I did and just the bottom corner or you could do the enter wreath, its all up to you!

Halloween Fabric Wreath

Once you are done hot glue a fabric ribbon onto the sides and hang!

Thanks to the Lemon Tree Creations for creating this fabulous link page of blogs parties I will be linking this tutorial too! Also linking to eighteen25 halloween party!

its beginning to feel a lot like Fall..everywhere I go!

This week we are getting a fabulous look at what fall feels like and I am loving it! It has been my kind of weather! I know that it will probably warm up again but we are so close to being cool for a while and I can't be more excited. Saturday it was perfect out so we loaded up the car and head up to our favorite fall spot..Weston Missouri. We usually go for the Apple Fest but this year we went up the week before and it was not horribly crowded and had plenty of activities to enjoy. I cant wait to keep enjoying all this fall goodness!
